Hunting Tips

Bullfrog Hunting With Slingshots

One of the most underrated weapons is the sling shot. Most look at it as a toy but in the right hands, it is a very good small game getter.

How To Get Started
Well there are all kinds of slingshots out there from the mass produced wrist rockets to the custom made slingshot or the forked limb. Also, there are all types of band materials from flat bands to tubes. They definitely have less power than a hunting bow from a site like GetRecurveBow.com but you won’t spend as much money either and will still be able to take down small animals! As for which slingshot is the best? Well, what you shoot the best may not be what is best for the next guy. You just have to find what works for you through trial and error. To start, choose one and practice. The more you practice, the better you will get. Start off at 10 meters (33 feet), and use the bottom of a soda can as a target. When you are hitting the bottom of a can about 4 out of 5 times, you may be ready for a hunt. Next, pick out what you want to hunt. In this article, we will discuss hunting bullfrogs.

What you need:

  • Slingshot / ammo
  • Head light
  • Rubber boots
  • No fear of the swamps at night
  • Compass

When you get ready to hunt, go out to the swamp, river bottoms, pond, or where ever might hold bullfrogs in your area. I go with my son, nephews, and a few of their friends/classmates. We start off at about 10 pm and hunt until the early morning lights, if we are doing really well. We normally hunt in two man teams because of the gators and cotton mouth snakes in our area. Being knee to waist deep in a swamp with a gator, you may need some help. It is always a good idea to hunt in teams for lots of safety reasons. The best way to shoot frogs is from the back. So when you see one, work your way around to get the shot. Bullfrogs are tough. Some of them have eagle globes and anchors tattooed on them! The good thing about a slingshot is it is compact. You are not having to carry a 12 to 14 foot gig around and at 33 feet, you don’t scare them off unless you miss. Then you still may get another shot on them. The compass comes in handy at night because in some spots, you may get turned around. Here are some pictures of bullfrogs we have hunted with slingshots.

Here is a list of some of my favorite places to get slingshots and supplies:

  • Pocket Predator (TX)
  • Simple-Shot Shooting Sports (NC)
  • Wingshooter’s Fire Ant (NV)
  • Metro Grade Goods (Canada)
  • Make your own

A Few Reminders
One of the nice things about slingshots is that you can make your own from supplies you may already have. There are forums on the internet such as the Slingshot Community Forum and the Slingshot Forum. They have many people there willing to get you started in slingshots so give it a look and see if it’s for you. It is not only a fun hobby, but a useful hunting tool as well. One of the best parts is enjoying the fruits of our labor by cooking up a good batch of frog legs, our favorite recipe is provided! Have fun, be safe, and good hunting.

Recipe – Fried Frog Legs

  • 20 large bullfrog legs cleaned
  • Yellow corn meal
  • Flour
  • Salt, pepper, garlic powder
  • Half and half cream
  • Oil

In a Ziploc bag, mix corn meal, flour, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Soak legs in half and half for at least 10 minutes (longer is better) in refrigerator. Place frog legs in the corn meal mixture bag and coat very well. Heat your oil and drop in. When they float, take the legs out and put them on a paper napkin. Tie your tongue to your leg because if you don’t, it will beat you to death trying to get them tasty frog legs.

How to Hunt Safe – Tips to hunt safely

As fun as hunting sounds, it is also very dangerous. You will be in the deep roots of the jungle, where you will be faced with your worst fears come true. At any instant, you will be faced by an enormous, fierce animal and you will tend to forget everything that you were trained for. There are some things that you need to keep in mind when you go off on hunting. Make sure you are properly aware of those tips and techniques. Some of those tips and techniques are:

Firearm safety

When you are off to hunt for animals, you are bound to carry a firearm with you. You cannot just go pro with knives and arrows. You need to consider a number of things while carrying a firearm. Some of them are:

Firearm safety

  • How you treat your gun: Always treat it as if it is loaded. Even if the safety is on, never underestimate the capability of guns to fire at wrong times. Misfire happens mostly due to the heavy nature of the guns. Make sure, that does not happen.
  • Don’t wave it around. Only use it whenever necessary. The best place for a gun is probably in its holster. But, you have to use a gun whenever pressingly necessary. Take your gun only when absolutely necessary, and make sure to point it where you plan to shoot.
  • Keep your finger off the trigger at all times, except when you are ready to shoot. Also, clearly identify your target before shooting.

Be aware of the weather and its changes

No matter how good of a hunter you are, there is one thing you cannot control, which is, the weather. You can be at risk for dangerous diseases in cold conditions, and also in conditions as hot as 50 degrees. Make sure that you check the weather report before setting off on the job so that you don’t encounter a climate you weren’t expecting. Use warm layers for clothes and avoid wearing any type of clothes that retain moisture.

Let someone know about where you are going

Just like in movies, most hunting parties go wrong when you go off somewhere without informing anyone about it. It is not a good plan to go off somewhere, without informing someone. That someone might be the one that saves you when something goes wrong. You need to tell people about your plans who knows where you are going and by when you are supposed to be back. If you don’t reach by the time you are supposed to they will know that something is wrong.
